Holeman Canyon Hike

APRIL 12, EASTER SUNDAY, 2009

Woke around five am to the squalling of a Canada goose that sounded as though it was right outside the tent door. It wasn’t. It was in the river before the camp. It would repeatedly fly upstream and then allow the current to carry it downstream, all the while squawking its head off. No others came to visit, so I guess this carrying on was in vain.

We awoke to sun and a gorgeous clear skyour first on the river. After breakfast of oatmeal, scrambled in tortillas, and cocoa for me, we tidied up the camp a bit and then set out on our Holeman Canyon hike. I was eager to show Jess some of the wonders Peter and I had seen yesterday afternoon.

Toward the end of the canyon we are closer to Candlestick Tower and can see how it got its name

After our hike, we ate a quick lunch, broke down camp, and carted all down the sand dunes to the T-cat. Since Peter had gotten so carried away with the fire last night, he had to dig a deep hole to bury the ashes. I helped him a bit and spread new sand over the place where the fire had been. No one without a shovel would know we’d been there. Also, the next high water will erase all traces.

We had a time getting the T-cat out over the mud and rocks, but managed and set off at 1:10 pm
